Urban Runner

This is my blog. I live, work and run in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I'm a regular 9 to 5er trying to find out what he can do with his running.

When I'm not running I've been known to enjoy the odd cup of coffee.

Touching Base

The recovery period after the Philadelphia marathon has been going well. We deliberately didn’t load up my schedule so that I had time for my hip flexor to work its way back to health. The hip flexor is, I’m happy to say coming along nicely.

This has been a real winter this year as well. Last week I had my first treadmill run of the year. It’s tough to getting used to running on the dreadmill but it’s better than being outside when the weather is not nice.

I did get to run in the snow on Tuesday this week. The plows had not gotten to any of the sidewalks. There was no way to run with any sort of regular steady speed. It was nice to be out in the snow though. Last night we were still seeing some of the effects of the storm. The city is a little slower this year getting to certain spots to clear the sidewalks. Last night was hit and miss. The canal was beautiful and cleared the full 4 feet wide but baseline was like running through snow drifts in parts.

Most of my runs this month are just in zone 1. For me at least this means that I can do these outside. I have 2 sessions with intervals in zone 5. For those I’m planning to try out the indoor track in the east end of the city. I’ve still got the treadmill at Peak to fall back on.

Overall I’ve been feeling really strong which is probably a good indication that the recovery has gone well. The first two weeks after Phili were extremely light. This was a good mental break as well.

Lastly, I can’t help but smile when I think of all the support I’ve gotten through my four marathons in 12 months & 13 days. It really helps and is so very much appreciated.
