Urban Runner

This is my blog. I live, work and run in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I'm a regular 9 to 5er trying to find out what he can do with his running.

When I'm not running I've been known to enjoy the odd cup of coffee.

Traveling a bunch ...

I've been in Minneapolis all week on a last minute trip for work. I've run just not a lot this week.

Lake Placid was interesting. I arrived there just in time to get sick. First time in a long time. Not much fun. Some sort of Stomach / Intestinal bug.
- On the Saturday I did run, just not the scheduled two hours as I hadn't been able to eat anything.
- I ended up doing my long run Tuesday night after I got back which worked out fine.

Tuesday/Wednesday after Lake Placid I had good runs.

Thursday home again sicker than a dog. Same thing. Obviously what ever went through my system wasn't gone.

By Saturday I was feeling okay again. I ran both Saturday and Sunday as scheduled.

Monday through today I've been in Minneapolis as noted. I've run each morning here but just straight runs. Today I head home. No planned trips after this (personal or work).

There is some good news out of this bug that went through me. On my run last Saturday I felt the same as I had on race day here in May. Same symptoms in that I wasn't able to take in much of my SP3 mixture and felt somewhat unsettled. I had good size breakfast about four hours before the run and it was obvious that it had not digested. I strongly suspect this was the same pattern in May.

If I experienced this last Saturday and in May there must be a common link. It may be worthwhile to talk to my doctor. Alternatively it may be a food allergy of some sort.

Lake Placid Weekend

Haven’t blogged for a while but thought I would try and do some this weekend while I’m away for my annual weekend in Lake Placid to help, cheer and watch the Ironman USA event. It’s always a fun event with over 2000 people starting every year. Imagine that many people starting the swim at the same time. Mayhem to say the least.

We have small group of us that go down each year. We get together throughout the weekend but have plenty of time to explore and train and shop.

Today is a recovery day. I ran short recovery run with Jo-Anne (a.k.a. the wife, commander-in-chief home fleet) this morning. Nothing else planned for the day for training.

I’m also bringing my bike down with me again this year. It will be a lot less distance this year as I’m only there for 3 days hence I won’t probably have time to do a full loop. Part of me is okay with that. ;-) Okay maybe a big part.

I should have time for at least one swim in Mirror Lake. It’s fun to swim while all the buoys are in place for the race. The first couple of buoys are more than enough for me in general as I don’t swim that far.

Tomorrow I have a two hour run scheduled. That will be the big training event for the weekend. I’ll probably do two one hour out and backs so that I can refill my bottle half way. That’s always the challenge when you travel to find places to get water. Within the town of Lake Placid there a few spots but you very quickly get out of town on a long run.

Time to hit the road. Had my first coffee at Bridgehead and will get one for the road as well.
